On November 2 and 3, European Horizons had the joy of hosting its flagship Fall Policy Convention in Washington D.C. Held annually, the Convention serves the purpose of equipping young change-makers with necessary skills to become active citizens with the ability to shape the future of their communities. This year, the Fall Policy Convention also served as the launch event of our new Transatlantic Leaders Fellowship. In the transatlantic spirit, we hosted conventions in both D.C. and London, for fellows on both the North American track and the European track. The fellows represent over 28 nationalities from three continents. Having featured policy workshops, panel discussions and networking opportunities, we are pleased to share a recap of the event for all those who were unable to attend.

After launching our Transatlantic Leaders Fellowship program in Washington D.C., European Horizons had the joy of welcoming our European fellows to London for the second Fall Policy Convention. On 16 and 17 November, over 40 fellows from 20 countries gathered at Europe House to delve into key issues surrounding transatlantic affairs and what it means to lead a career in this field. As well as an opportunity for fellows to get to know one another and the European Horizons team, we led multiple workshops across the two days focused on developing key skills required in policymaking. We were also honoured to host an array of distinguished guest speakers, who each provided invaluable insights into the European and transatlantic field and shared their experiences as influential players. To celebrate this milestone, we are excited to provide a recap of the London Fall Policy Convention 2023.

The United States and the European Union have some of the closest diplomatic and political ties in the world. However, one area where they do diverge is in their economic policy. Many proponents of the transatlantic relationship feel that the best course of action to take in order to mend this rift is to establish a free-trade deal between the two entities, as they feel that in doing so they will enable closer collaboration which can strengthen their ties. But just how realistic is this proposition and, if it’s so beneficial, why is it not a reality?

It is widely perceived that our societies are driving themselves apart in this time of environmental, geopolitical, and social uncertainty. These increasing divides are threatening to disrupt the very fabric of our domestic and international systems. But the well-being of our democracies requires us to bridge this increasing polarization. The realm of psychology holds the keys to deciphering the roots of societal polarization and the cognitive biases that drive it. As pivotal elections approach in 2024, we must know how our mental processing is shaping elections and how actors can use our biological blueprints to their advantage. With this knowledge we can recognize the duties of politicians aiming to rule for the common good.
