Our organisation is guided by a unique policy vision.

How we approach policy challenges

Our policy work is guided by a set of priorities that reflect what we see as the most pressing challenges in transatlantic affairs. These priorities play a major role in orienting our work—from our publications and one-off events to our flagship conferences.

Our policy work

Through preparatory workshops, our policy experts equip students with policy-writing, analysis, and rhetorical skills — educating and mentoring our members to excel in the multifaceted and international arena of policy-making.

Our Policy Priorities for 2023-2024

  • We continue our exploration of the subject matter of our organization: the betterment of the transatlantic partnership. Security has served as one of the foundational pillars of transatlantic relations, with NATO at its core. Russia's war on Ukraine and the rise of China demonstrate that cooperation in this area remains as imperative as ever. By fostering common goals, the United States and the European Union can strengthen the transatlantic partnership and contribute to the preservation of democracy. This entails proactive collaboration in identifying and countering threats to democratic processes, promoting transparency, defending the rule of law, and ensuring the protection of individual freedoms and human rights. To ensure the future of democracy, it is necessary for the transatlantic partnership to thrive in order to uphold shared principles and take action when democracy is threatened. To this end, the US and EU should foster common goals to strengthen the transatlantic partnership and the state of democracy. For these reasons, we want to equip our members to apply the transatlantic relationship as a tool to navigate developments in global security and foster policy solutions to common challenges in transatlantic security.

  • The climate is quickly approaching a point of no return. At the same time, both the pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have directly caused a worldwide energy crisis that may require non-sustainable solutions. With this priority, we aim to foster policy ideas to both correct our collision course with climate catastrophe and produce policy solutions and strategies to mitigate the worst effects of a global increase in oil and gas prices. As global economic leaders and leading contributors to the climate crisis, the EU and U.S. are chiefly responsible for impactful economic and climate policy responses – and transatlantic collaboration on energy and climate is indispensable.

  • We will soon experience the widespread application of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies in economic, social, and security spheres. China has been quick to recognise the significance of AI and harness its potential, making ambitious advancements toward becoming the world’s AI superpower. It is crucial, then, for the EU & US to stay afloat with new developments and maintain influence in the digital sphere by cooperating to establish a system of AI governance and promote new global standards in emerging technologies. Transatlantic alignment in approaches to innovation and regulation is vital to ensure that advancements in AI are grounded in fundamental principles, such as protecting democratic values and upholding the liberal world order.

Past Policy Priorities

  • In the past several years, a decline in democracy and trust in the democratic process has been increasingly visible on both sides of the Atlantic. Extreme nationalist or radical sects seek to undermine the stability of liberal democracies and to sabotage the global partnerships which are an important component of peace & stability both in and between nations. From election interference to suppressing political activity, these attacks are a detriment to the ability of people around the world to express their beliefs, shape their societies, and even maintain the security of nations. To ensure the future of democracy, it is necessary for the transatlantic partnership to thrive in order to uphold shared principles and to take action when democracy is threatened. To this end, the US and EU should foster common goals to strengthen the transatlantic partnership and the state of democracy.

  • A globalized world facing existential challenges requires international policy solutions. The relations that EU and US have with Asia play a key role in solving these collective action problems.

  • With this priority, we aim to facilitate a critical debate on systemic racism in the United States and Europe. European Horizons hopes to promote policy proposals that promise to tackle racial inequalities and discrimination in society and impact narratives downplaying Europe's colonial past. Transcending disciplinary boundaries, we also foster discourse on systemic racism in the context of emerging technologies such as facial recognition and artificial intelligence.

  • European Horizons seeks to help develop a transatlantic policy framework to Defend Democracy against Cyber Threats. The theme covers multifaceted challenges such as foreign interference in elections, cyber warfare, and the 5G-Huawei controversy.
